Food Safety

BC’s tree fruit growers are recognized as leaders in food safety.

Protecting our health and environment

Food safety starts in the orchard: our growers follow environmentally and ecologically friendly growing methods, in accordance to the Integrated Fruit Production Guide issued by the BCFGA.

BC fruit growers are always seeking new opportunities and ways to improve on-farm and food safety, working with governments and other industry organizations to ensure an optimal “farm to fork” safety. Through their cooperative and private packers, BC growers certify their food safety through a variety of recognized programs, including:

  • Safe Quality Foods
  • GlobalGAP
  • The Tree Fruit and Vines Canadian on Farm Food Safety Program

A good traceability system is key

In food safety, our industry is continuously looking for more efficient ways to track its products, and even working in collaboration with international organizations to establish industry-wide standards for produce traceability. An efficient traceability program is working to track the movement of food from production through distribution to consumption.

In the tree fruit industry, stickers identifying the grower are attached to bins when they arrive at the packing house. Packing times, dates, and packing locations are marked on the fruit cartons as they're packed. B.C. Brand stickers are placed on each individual fruit sold in bulk, and apple bags are marked with a Universal Product Code - or bar code - to indicate the specific variety and grade. All of these techniques make it easier to identify and track products.
